Family of Tech Billionaire Mike Lynch and His Daughter Release Statement Following Superyacht Tragedy

The family of Mike Lynch has issued a statement in response to the tragic sinking of his superyacht.

The 160-foot luxury yacht, known as the Bayesian, capsized in a violent storm near Italy.

The incident occurred early Monday morning when the vessel, carrying 22 individuals—12 passengers and 10 crew members—was struck by a sudden and severe waterspout tornado.

Italian media reports indicate that the tornado’s intense winds damaged the yacht's sole mast, causing it to lose stability and ultimately overturn.

The Italian Coast Guard and local authorities promptly initiated a rescue operation, successfully saving 15 individuals, according to Sky News.

Unfortunately, seven people have been confirmed dead, including British billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah Lynch.

The Lynch family has since shared a photo of Hannah and her father.

In a statement reported by the BBC, a family spokesperson conveyed their profound grief: "The Lynch family is devastated, in shock, and is being comforted and supported by family and friends.

Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services, and all those who assisted in the rescue.

Their one request now is that their privacy be respected during this time of unimaginable sorrow."

Survivors include Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old child.

The tragedy also claimed the lives of five others, including Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International Bank, and his wife, Judy Bloomer, as well as Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo, and the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas.

After the final body was recovered, the Italian Coast Guard vessel was seen returning to port, while divers on the quayside removed their equipment.

The Italian Coast Guard has stated that raising the sunken yacht from the seabed is not currently planned but could be considered in the future. Divers have reported that the vessel remains "practically intact" on the seabed.

Hannah was a former student at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, London. A school spokesperson expressed their shock and condolences: "We are all incredibly shocked by the news. Our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved."

Following the recovery of the final body, Italian media reports suggest that prosecutors may soon announce a manslaughter investigation into the incident.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Termini Imerese, led by Ambrogio Cartosio, is reportedly looking into the shipwreck and potential charges of culpable manslaughter, according to The Mirror.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic event.
