Imane Khelif speaks out after naming J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk in cyberbullying lawsuit

Khelif, who secured a gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games, has faced significant controversy regarding her gender. This controversy has been fueled by widespread misinformation about her identity online.

Mark Adams, Chief Spokesperson for the International Olympic Committee, addressed the issue at a news conference earlier this month. He confirmed that Khelif is a qualified athlete and refuted the false claims that she is transgender.

Adams emphasized that these rumors were part of a broader campaign of transphobia and prejudice related to the perceived femininity of women of color. To counter these claims, childhood photos of Khelif were released to demonstrate that she had not undergone any gender transition.

In response to the harassment she faced, Khelif has initiated legal action against those perpetuating online hate. According to Nabil Boudi, a Paris-based attorney affiliated with the National Center for the Fight Against Online Hatred, Khelif’s complaint against the social media platform X has been received.

The complaint involves allegations of cyber harassment, public insults due to gender, incitement to discrimination, and insults related to origin.

Boudi noted that the lawsuit includes several high-profile names, including J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk, with former President Donald Trump also under investigation due to his online statements.

Khelif shared her experiences with Algerian news channel El Bilad, expressing the profound impact of the bullying she endured. "Immediately after, there was a big uproar from major politicians and celebrities, including Elon Musk and Trump," she said.

"It affected me deeply and caused a great deal of fear. Thankfully, the people of Algeria and the Arab world know me for my femininity, courage, and will."

She added, "I don’t want politics to intersect with sports, but unfortunately, it has. These politicians have no right to label me as transgender."

Khelif also addressed the broader implications of bullying in an interview with SNTV, urging global audiences to uphold Olympic principles and avoid harassment of athletes.

"Bullying can have devastating effects, harming individuals' thoughts, spirits, and well-being. It can create division and destroy lives. I urge everyone to refrain from such behavior."

Khelif’s pursuit of justice continues as she seeks redress for the online abuse she has suffered.
